This week’s selection comes from Zakopane, Poland. It was the first city I visited on my 2011 Tour d’Europe. Zakopane is knows as the winter capital of Poland thriving with winter sport enthusiasts during its winter months, however Zakopane is just as busy during the summer due to its beautiful surrounding valleys and mountains. One of the highlights of the city is the main street called krupówki street which is filled with great restaurants, ethnic shops, and of course street venders. Among venders selling a variety of souvenirs resembling the culture of the highlands, we find carts (as shown above) selling Oscypki (singular: oscypek). It is a smoked cheese made of salted sheep milk and produced exclusively in the Tatra Mountains region of Poland. It serves as one of the icons resembling the local culture.
